The Scandinavian Spirit

A Journey through Nordic Soul

Duration

12-14 days

Season

All year

Best suited for

Those who value world-class design, culinary innovation, learning about the destinations you visit, and the restorative power of the great outdoors. This journey offers balance between sophisticated urban culture and a meaningful encounter with the elements.

The world often thinks of the Nordics as a single place. While it’s true that the cultures of our Nordic nations are similar, it’s really the subtle harmonies and contrasts between us that make this region so interesting. You could think of it as four countries embodying four different philosophies: Hygge, friluftsliv, lagom and sisu. You'll find traces of all four across our borders, but to truly understand them, one must visit the specific landscapes that gave birth to them.

This journey is a curated introduction to the Scandinavian heartland, stretching from the designer-friendly streets of Copenhagen and the picturesque pulse of Stockholm to the cathedral-like silence of the Norwegian fjords. By weaving together the distinct identities of Denmark, Norway and Sweden (with an optional Finnish prelude), we invite you to discover why the Nordic countries are the happiest in the world, and what’s unique to our way of living.

This is a deep dive into the 'Nordic Model', in which a well-functioning society meets raw, untamed nature, and where quality of life is the ultimate luxury.

Impact statement

By prioritising family owned boutique hotels, such as Hotel Union Øye and Ett Hem, and engaging with local specialist guides, this journey supports UN SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. We value the preservation of cultural heritage and promote low-impact travel through the use of the scenic Scandinavian rail network, ensuring these landscapes and traditions remain resilient for the next generation.

Tailor-Made for You

This itinerary is a canvas. Whether you wish to dive into the Art Nouveau history of Ålesund, explore the culinary heritage of Trondheim, or extend your stay in the Finnish Lakeland, we will tailor the journey to reflect your personal curiosities.

Days 1-4

Copenhagen

Hygge: The Art of Living Well

Copenhagen invites you into the ‘soft life’: A city where human-centric design dispels daily friction. This is reflected in the Danish landscape and the notion of hygge; an open, approachable terrain that has shaped a culture of egalitarianism and a collective refusal to rush things.

Stay at Hotel Sanders, a residence of quiet craftsmanship where the service is intuitive rather than performative. It feels like the sophisticated home of a world-travelling friend.

With Copenhagen’s wide, level horizons, don’t just look admiringly at the bikes - saddle up! Cycle the streets perfectly adapted for two wheels. Stop for smørrebrød that looks like modern art and tastes like home.

Visit the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art or the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. You’ll leave wondering why every city doesn’t feel this generous.

Days 4-8

Sunnmøre, Norway

Nature’s Cathedral: The Fjords

A short flight takes you to the dramatic verticals of the Sunnmøre Alps. This is the ‘soul-cleansing’ portion of your journey. Here, you will discover friluftsliv, the Norwegian art of being outdoors (more about this in our Up Guide to Norway).

The landscape here is not a backdrop. You will experience how the landscape shapes the Norwegian mindset: resilient, traditional, and fundamentally connected to the elements. Navigate deep, glassy fjords by private boat and feel the silence of a place that remains untamed. Retreat to the timeless elegance of Relais & Châteaux’s Hotel Union Øye or Storfjord Hotel, find architectural harmony at Juvet Landscape Hotel, or settle into your own private luxury residence where the fjords and mountains feel like yours alone.

Days 8-10

Oslo

Urban Evolution

To Oslo by train, the most soulful way to witness the changing terrain. This city balances its Viking resilience with a bold, sustainable future. It is a city of ‘pioneers’, from Arctic explorers to the architects of the modern Opera House.

Your base is Sommerro House, an Art Deco landmark that functions as a lifestyle platform, furnishing you with curated wellness and community energy.

From here, you can explore the city’s heart on foot, wandering the fjord’s edge to the storied sculptures of Vigeland and Ekeberg, embracing the local spirit of ut på tur, aldri sur as you absorb the city highlights, or venture just beyond to stroll the grounds of Kistefos, where the river's flow meets the spectacular architecture of 'The Twist.'

Days 10-12

Stockholm

The Art of 'Lagom'

Conclude in Stockholm, a city of fourteen islands defined by lagom: the Swedish philosophy of ‘just the right amount’. You will find that the Swedes have perfected the balance between entrepreneurial drive and a profound appreciation for life’s quiet moments. Beyond the city’s historic pulse lies an archipelago of over 30,000 islands, where the urban and the wild meet seamlessly.

Reside at Ett Hem or one of our other favourite boutique residences, where the standard of hospitality is set by the feeling of belonging, not the logos on the towels. A place of unforced time, where conversations with like-minded fellow travellers matter more than conspicuous display.

The ‘Danish pastry’ might be better known, but Swedish pastries are truly woven into the Scandinavian identity. A coffee and cinnamon bun for ‘fika’ is more than a break; it is a ritual of connection. This social institution invites you to slow down, converse, and find presence in the company of others.

12-14

The Nordic Extension:

The Finnish Prelude

For those arriving from across the globe, Helsinki offers a meaningful introduction to the Nordic mindset.

Finland is often described as Scandinavia’s ‘intriguing cousin’ – a place where the language and the logic are entirely its own. To understand the Nordics, you must first understand the Finns, who have quietly held the mantle of the world’s happiest people for eight years running.

Deepen your sense of presence with the traditional Finnish sauna, a mental reset and a form of meditation that clears the mind and restores the body. This is a practice of longevity that feels entirely unhurried, reflecting a country where saunas are so central to the culture that they outnumber the cars on the road.

It is here, in the steam and silence, that the core of Finnish resilience, the sisu, is revealed.

Resilience is also to be discovered at the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the coast of Helsinki. The fortress consists of six kilometres of walls, 100 cannons, intriguing tunnels, and beautiful parks.

Why the Nordics?

You will return home with more than photographs. You will take with you a piece of the Nordic ‘we-feeling’: An understanding of how high levels of both taxes and trust create a society of immense freedom.

Whether it’s the Danish openness, the Norwegian love for the wild, the Swedish eye for beauty, or the Finnish mental strength, this journey is designed to inspire a more balanced, intentional way of living in your own everyday life.
